House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City Book 1) by Sarah J Maas

90840639_2677630025803870_7838533336543921961_n(1)

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life-working hard all day and partying all night-until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She’ll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose-to assassinate his boss’s enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he’s offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion-one that could set them both free, if they’d only let it.

Let me just say, this book was AMAZING! The first 200 pages were quite hard for me to get through, however. There was so much information being thrown my way. I wasn’t quite sure how to process all of it. This is a giant book weighing in at almost 800 pages. Part of me wishes that I could go back and just re-read the beginning because it would make more sense now that I’ve actually finished the story. Once you wade your way through the amazing world building, the story makes it totally worth it!

World building – WOW, just WOW! Sarah is very good at setting up the book and putting the reader right inside the world of Crescent City. The creativity behind this book just astounds me. How someone can come up with such intricate ideas like that, blows me away.

Characters – I absolutely adored Bryce! I’m all about that snarky! She’s so quick tongued and brilliant. She has to hold so much into herself. Her character really, really grows almost overnight. Hunt….HUNT! I just want to pull him in for a tight hug. This poor guy has been through Hel and back, literally. He also has to hold so much in. All he wants is his freedom. He’s willing to do just about anything to get out of his bargain and no longer be a slave. So many times I just wanted to cry on his behalf. Bryce and Hunt make and amazing team! I really hope we get to see more of them in the next book!

Plot – This book….I swear to you. The plot is like spot on. Yes, you have to get through all the world building to get to that amazing plot. Sarah is such a good story teller. Every single one of her books make a full circle. This one totally comes full circle for me. She’s really good at setting things up and then domino-ing them. Only to turn around and build everything right back up!

Moral of all of this….get a comfy chair and forget about what is going on in the world. This book will take you to another time and place. It’s rated as an Adult Novel, but I didn’t think it was too racy. I would recommend this to someone who enjoys fantasy novels or just loved Sarah J. Maas books in general. I’ve still got a total book hangover after reading this one! My mind is just reeling. The passion, pain, love, friendship, betrayal, murder, and even some laughs! I would say this is a one sit read, but it’s a big boy and make take a few days. Soooo, so worth it!

From Blood & Ash by Jennifer L Armentrout

A Maiden…

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

A Duty…

The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden.

A Kingdom…

Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel.

“Dreamy, twisty, steamy escapism. Take me back!” -New York Times bestseller Wendy Higgins

“Jennifer Armentrout has the power to control my emotions with every word she writes. From swooning to crying to racing through the pages to find out what happens next, I couldn’t stop reading about Hawke and Poppy, and you won’t be able to either.” – Brigid Kemmerer, New York Times Bestselling Author of A Curse So Dark and Lonely

“Action, adventure, sexiness, and angst! From Blood and Ash has it all and double that. So many feels and so many moments it made me cheer for the character. Read. This. Book! You’ll be obsessed!” – Tijan NYT bestselling author.

FROM BLOOD AND ASH. WE WILL RISE!

This book surprised me, but in a really really good way. Jen hinted several times that she was writing a high fantasy novel. I must admit, I was a bit intrigued. Who am I kidding? She could write a direction manual and I’m going to read it.

This book was absolutely epic and completely blew me away. It’s a big boy too, coming in at over 600 pages! Love, lust, lies, hatred, blood….forbidden.

Don’t start this book if you have a bunch of stuff to accomplish during your day. You will not want to put this one down. The plot is unlike anything I’ve ever read before. It’s like a mixture of all things good and evil in the fantasy world.

Penellaphe (Poppy) who is the “chosen” one or the maiden. She is completely veiled where no one can see her face. Very few people know her actual identity. When we meet her, her biggest concerns are Ascension. Which reminds me so much of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, season 3 where the creepy ass mayor is ascending. If you have seen Buffy or that season, are you really living? Any who, the entire story surrounding Poppy is super interesting. I had a ton of questions about how the actual Ascension actually works. No worries, it all comes out sooner or later. The whole Maiden thing was actually pretty crazy. I loved the whole “forbidden” aspect.

Enter Hawke! Holy hotness Batman! How does one describe Hawke? Let me just say he is right up there next to Daemon Black when it comes to book boyfriends. He’s so young and has worked his way up within the Royal Guard. He’s super hot and also very mysterious. Hawke pretty much turned my world upside down. He’s like this serious, yet funny, mixture of everything you want in a book BF. However, Poppy is SUPER forbidden. Which makes any scene between the two of them so hot it’s flammable! Like grab me a paper fan and an iced cold tea. You might need it for some of their encounters. PHEW!

Overall, I was super excited for this story. Jen has been teasing it for sometime. When I actually got to the reading portion, I was completely BLOWN away. The plot, the characters, THAT FREAKING ENDING! Such an amazing writer and I hope you enjoy this book as much, if not more, than I did. I’m seriously thinking about just re-reading it again. ENJOY!

I just discovered Meghan Quinn!

Remember back in January when I said I was behind.  Apparently, that hasn’t changed!  But, I stumbled upon a new to me author!  Introducing…. Meghan Quinn!

Meghan has a unique style of writing.  She is witty and her female characters are walked all over like in so many others in romancelandia.  My first read by Meghan was Co-wrecker.  I thought with that name… what can go wrong?

Co-wrecker is about two young adults who want to be friends while working together.  But, can they stay just coworkers?  PSSH No!!  What kind of romance book would that be?  It’s fun.  It has a little bit of angst.  Will they get together?  Will they stay apart?  Will Sadie get back together with her ex?

If you haven’t picked up this book yet, you should.  Co-wrecker is the first in a four book series.

Another book I have read by her was:  The Virgin Romance Novelist

Hold on to your hats boys and girls.  This book was a laugh a minute.

Our main girl, Rosie, is a virgin.  She has just graduated from college and landed her first writing job at a cat magazine.  From her sexual encounters to her bosses clothing choices, this book is HILARIOUS.  I had so much fun reading this.  I had only read the first two sentences before I let two of my fellow Sisters know they needed to add this to their TBR pile right away.

I am devouring all her books now as most of them are available on KU.  As a bonus for me, Megan is going to be one of the attending authors at Apollycon next month.  I cant wait to meet her and let her know how much I have personally enjoyed reading her romance novels.

Megan has several series out already and a new book called The Trade coming out March 12th!    For more information, here is Meghan’s website and a buy link for The Trade!

A Curse So Dark and Lonely (Cursebreakers, #1)A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was an amazing retelling of the classic story Beauty and the Beast. I haven’t always been a huge fan of taking the classics and putting a twist on them. This book stopped me in my tracks.

The characters were down right fantastic! Prince Rhen, Harper and Grey are everything I want in my characters. Dark, mystical, magical, a little flawed, and down right badass. Rhen is ready for the season to end and his torment to be over. When Harper is dragged, literally, into his Emberfall it’s amazing to see his transformation. I was a HUGE fan of Grey. I was rooting for him the entire book. He’s so loyal and trusting! I want to snatch him up and hug him tightly.

Something else that also made me happy was how Brigid portrayed the actual curse bestowed upon the beast. It would have to be very exhausting to live for so many seasons. I probably would have lost my mind if I was Rhen or Grey. Then again, it seems as if they were already on the edge, ready to jump. The cruse was literally what made me fly through pages and stay up past my bedtime. I loved every second of it.

If you’re a fan of YA read this book! It’s a truly amazing read!! It deserves all the stars from me! Cannot wait to read the next installment A Heart So Fierce and Broken. Until then, I’ll be dreaming of Grey!! ❤

Echos Between Us by Katie McGarry

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Really enjoyed this YA Romance book! The characters were excellent. I love that Veronica and Sawyer aren’t perfectly perfect. They each are experiencing something that separates them from their friends. In turn, it helps to draw them together. It did have a touch of paranormal, which I absolutely loved!

The book is told from dual perspectives and gives an insight on each characters true feelings. The story really flowed and was easy to follow. All in all the writing style was very well written. I loved that Katie used a journal from a real life person who was suffering from TB in the early 1900’s. That was easily one of my favorite parts of the book. Then to learn that Evelyn was a real person, MIND BLOWN!

I highly recommend this one if you’re looking for something lite and fun to read!

It’s a New Year and I’m behind!

booksCan you believe 2020 has been here for a week already?

What are we doing here at Sister Sister Book Blog this year?  Well, I’m glad you asked.  Stephanie and I have cut back our book signing trips to just one this year.  Maybe two, if I can convince her to put her big girl pants and go to Book Con in NYC.

We have our big trip to Apollycon in DC again this year.  This will be the 6th year the event has gone on and the 5th year we have attended.  The event is hosted by Jennifer L Armentrout.  (If you haven’t had a chance to read her, she is PHENOMENAL.)  There are over 120 authors attending.  It gives people a chance to meet their favorite authors and discover new to them authors.  For me, it gives me a chance to fan girl over books with my friends who live so far away.  Let’s be honest, its fun to see Drew Leighty too.  He’s so dreamy (Re:cover model/actor/hotness).

Books I’m Dying to Read This Year  (in no order)

There are so many good books releasing in 2020.  Here are a few that I am personally looking forward to.

Unforgiven – Jay Crownover — Hot Cowboys and Romantic Suspense (OH MY!)

The Queen, The Brightest Night, Rage & Ruin – Jennifer L Armentrout — Three books in three different series that I can NOT wait.  The suspense is KILLING ME.

House of Earth and Blood – Sarah J Maas — This is a brand new series for SJM about a half-human/half-fae.  YES, PLEASE!!

Dream Maker – Kristen Ashley — Another new series!  It is a spin off of Dream Man (they are dreamy) and Rock Chick (YES!)!!

Book Goals?

Do you set a goal of how many books to read for the year?  This year my goal is 125.  It’s going to be tough.  I love to buy books but then I struggle to read all of them.  Sometimes, I go back and reread books before I can get out of a funk.

What do you have planned for 2020?  Let us know! (sistersisterbookblog@gmail.com)

The Burning Shadow (Origin Series #2) by Jennifer L Armentrout

When Evelyn Dasher crossed paths with Luc, she was thrown headfirst into the world of the Lux—only to discover that she was already far more involved in their world than she ever suspected.

Because the Luxen aren’t the only ones with a hidden past. There’s a gap in Evie’s memory, lost months of her life and a lingering sense that something happened, something she can’t remember and nobody is willing to tell her. She needs to find out the truth about who she is—and who she was. But every answer she finds only brings up more questions.

Her search for the truth brings her ever closer to Luc, the Origin at the center of it all. He’s powerful, arrogant, inhumanly beautiful, extremely dangerous…and possibly in love with her. But even as Evie falls for him, she can’t help but wonder if his attraction is to her, or to the memory of a girl who no longer exists.

And all the while, a new threat looms: reports of a flu-like, fatal virus that the government insists is being spread by Luxen. A horrifying illness that changes whoever it touches, spreading panic across a country already at its breaking point.

I’ve been waiting for the release of this book for MONTHS! It’s a little known fact that JLA is my favorite author. She will always be my #1.

This book was my everything! I love when JLA writes paranormal romance. She’s had me hooked since Obsidian. I’ve been a Daemon Black fan girl ever since.

via GIPHY

. Super excited that this book picks up right where The Darkest Star (Origin #1) left off. Literally, right where the last book left off.

I love Luc so very much! He’s super powerful, down right handsome, and super dangerous. His t-shirt choices and cheesy pick up lines are hilarious! Don’t let that fool you. He is a seriously dangerous Origin who will stop at nothing to protect Evie. He has been keeping a close watch on her for years. Luc himself has grown up so much since the Lux series….SIGH…he’s become so dreamy…

Evie has been dealt a shit hand in life. Poor thing has been through hell and back. She is fighting to figure out who she really is. So many bad things have happened to her in her past, now in her present things are getting cray-cray. There is a new “big bad” in town and Evie isn’t sure how she can help. She helps to uncover the new baddie and now they must work together to take them down.

There is so much ground covered in this book. Pay attention to all of the little details. Jen is really good at sliding them into the story. From the beginning to the ending I was hooked. The romance, danger, memories and fight scenes. It’s everything I love in a good paranormal YA! Please make sure that if you’re going to read this one that you have read the Lux series and The Darkest Star before continuing. I hope you love this book as much me!

Aflame (Fall Away #4) by Penelope Douglas

The tables have turned. Now I have the power—and it’s his turn to beg…

Everyone wants to be me.

Maybe it’s the sway of my skirt or the way I flip my hair, but I don’t care. Even though their attention is the last thing I crave, I just can’t stop. I dominate the track, the speed rattles my bones, and the wind and the crowd screams my name.

I’m her. The girl driver. The queen of the race. And I’m surviving—something he thought I’d never do.

They all talk about him. Did you see Jared Trent on T.V? What did you think of his last race, Tate? When is he coming back to town, Tate?

But I refuse to care too much. Because when Jared does come home, I won’t be here.

Tatum Brandt is gone. I’m someone new.

via GIPHY

The Fall Away series is like warm chocolate chip cookies, I just cannot get enough! When Jaxson and Juliet’s (K.C.) story ended I NEEDED to know more about Tate and Jared. Pen left their story wide open for another book. You better believe I “one-clicked” the hell out of it!

Let me start by saying, I LOVE when Pen puts songs in her book. It makes it so much easier for me to picture the scene. Also, she has amazing taste in music, so there’s that! When she brings us onto the scene with a music intro, it’s seriously my EVERYTHING! Tate peeling out listening to “Click, Click, Boom” by Saliva…all the goosebumps!

Now, onto the good stuff…

I was super impressed that Tate stood her ground when it came to Jared. The flashback two years prior nearly broke my wholesome little heart. Ugh, these two are perfect for each other. However, I can completely understand Jared’s need to spread his wings a little bit. If I would have been in Tate’s shoes, I would have been completely and utterly deviated. Even reading the book was giving me super anxiety. Like hurry up and love each other again.

Tate was focusing on school and living her life at the Loop. She was grounded and focused. Her life was easy, but she still felt like she was missing a piece of herself. She kept comparing every relationship to her and Jared’s. I wanted to like Ben, but I was always rooting for Jared. Even when he was being a jerkface.

Jared has grown up so much. He’s a badass motorcycle racer. He’s building a name and a life for himself. What he doesn’t have is Tate. Uggh, I wanted to push them into a room together and make them fall back in love. When they were at the Loop, my pulse was racing when Tate was on the back of his motorcycle. So many times this book made my heartbeat speed up.

This book is absolute FIRE! I keep using shouty capitals because, y’all, it’s that MF good! The romance and the “sexy” scenes are on point. Pen really knows how to write a scene that will make you burn. Straight up BURN!

Do I recommend this book? HELL YEAH! Do I recommend this series? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? ABSOLUTELY! I loved these books so very much! ❤

Excerpt

“I have to get whatever this is out, before it moves again, so … watch out.”
Before I have the chance to contemplate running into the living room and dive bombing onto the couch, he pulls the tile down, and dust explodes everywhere.
Coughing, from the onslaught of insulation falling out I jolt when something smacks into my chest.
I scream, ready to lodge the thing off of me when I hear the tiniest, most pitiful meow.
“It’s a kitty!” I exclaim in surprise. It comes out sounding more like kittaaay. I see big blue eyes and dusty oatmeal fur before I hug the kitten to my neck.
Jamie steps off the toilet lid, sets down the tile he cut out, and rubs drywall dust and insulation from his hair. “A cat?”
“A kitten.” I hold out the fluffy furball proudly so he can see. “My ceiling gave birth.”
He frowns at the kitten. “It’s dirty.”
“She’s perfect,” I croon, cuddling the squirming kitten to my chest. I don’t even know if it’s a girl, but it feels like she is.
“You’re not keeping the cat, Miranda,” he growls in warning. “Animals are not allowed.”
I jut my bottom lip out. “I should get special privileges. I am fucking the landlord.” I wink at him while petting the kitten on the top of her fluffy head. To the cat I say, “How’d you even get up in my ceiling?”
Jamie sighs, scrubbing his hands down his jaw. “Its mom probably got on the roof somehow and this one got separated.”
I hold the fluffy puff out at arm’s length. “You can be the Beta to my Alpha. The Fettuccine to my Alfredo. Ooh, that should be your name, Fettuccine.”
Jamie groans. “You’re not keeping it.”
“No, of course not,” I assure him. “I’ll take her to the animal shelter tomorrow.”
“Mhmm.”
He doesn’t believe me. He’s right to be wary. No way am I willingly giving up this cat. It feels like some sort of sign. If a kitten falls from your ceiling, clearly it’s chosen you, right? The wand chooses the wizard, after all, so can’t the cat choose the cat lady?
“I promise,” I tell him, crossing the fingers of my left hand behind my back. “Fettuccine will be out of here before you know it.”
Sure, I won’t be able to keep this a secret forever, but hopefully I can come up with a way to persuade him later.
His eyes narrow and I hope to God my nose isn’t twitching, because I’m in deep shit if it is.
“You shouldn’t name it. Names lead to attachment.”
“You shouldn’t call me sweetheart. Nicknames show a kind of fondness,” I mock playfully.
He leans his head back, looking up at the ceiling as if he’s begging it for answers.
“Between you, Toby, and my mom, I’m headed to an early grave.” I grin widely at him as he lowers his head and looks at me. “What?” he asks with confusion.
“You called him Toby.”
“Dammit,” he curses, bending to move the tile out of the way. “Don’t tell him I slipped up.”
Petting the cat, I lean my hip against the counter. “Ooh, blackmail. I won’t tell if you let me keep the cat.”

Author Bio

Hi. I’m Micalea. Ma-call-e-uh. Weird name, I know. My mom must’ve known I was going to be odd even in the womb. I’ve written a lot of books. Like a lot. Don’t ask me how many, I don’t remember at this point. I have an unhealthy addiction to Diet Coke but I can’t seem to break the habit. I listen to way too much music and hedgehogs have taken over my life. Crazy is the word that best sums up my life, but it’s the good kind of crazy and I wouldn’t change it for anything.
